The Auto Responder or Vacation module allows an administrator to enable an Out-of-Office reply on a users mailbox. The user will be able to specify the text which is sent back as a auto-response to any emails received while the user is away.

The steps have to be carried out on the Linux mail server.

1. Login to the server as root. If you have a Graphical interface, open up a Terminal Command Prompt.

2. You will need to change user logins to the name of the person who is going away. To do this you will use the SU command.

[root@mail ~]# su ray
[ray@mail root]$

You will notice that the prompt will change to reflect the new name.

3. run the  vacation command.

[ray@mail root]$ vacation

4. You will be presented with on screen instructions which you can follow.

5. Remember that when you are editing the text for your message, the standard VI editor command are to be used to save and exit the file.

6. In order to turn-off the message when the person returns, you will just need to run the same command again, and follow the on-screen instructions.
